Firm History
Loeb & Loeb was established in 1909. Founders Edwin and Joseph Loeb played a major role in the development of the City of Los Angeles in the early 1900s, helping to establish such institutions as the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, and Union Bank of California. In 1986, Loeb & Loeb merged with Hess Segal, a New York firm of comparable quality and vintage.
We have expanded aggressively through lateral hiring in recent years. In 2006, the Firm acquired a team of nationally recognized trusts and estates lawyers and also expanded the private equity, corporate and litigation practices. We also welcomed five attorneys to our New York office who brought significant experience in all aspects of real estate transactions and added to our ERISA and executive compensation capabilities. In Chicago, we added two practitioners in our national bankruptcy, restructuring and creditors' rights practice. Recently, Loeb & Loeb enhanced its intellectual property group with the addition of a patent litigation team that included several seasoned partners.
In 2005, the firm welcomed 15 lateral partners to core areas of practice including bankruptcy and creditor's rights, corporate and securities, intellectual property litigation, securities litigation, tax and trusts and estates. We also welcomed Gray Davis, former Governor of California, to the firm as of counsel in late 2004. In addition in that year, we added partners in a number of key areas, including a lateral group from Richman, Mann, Chizever, Phillips & Duboff in Los Angeles. In 2003, we opened an office in Chicago, anchored by an intellectual property group recruited from a highly regarded local firm.
Loeb & Loeb also has an expanding international practice. We have helped a variety of Asian companies list on the U.S. stock exchanges, including the first Chinese, Thai and Taiwanese companies to list on the American Stock Exchange. Many of our American clients see tremendous business opportunities in Asia, notably in China. In 2004, we entered into a strategic alliance with Fu & Tong, a leading Chinese law firm with offices in Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen and Zhuhai, as well as an associate office in Hong Kong.
